I’m so happy to be finally introducing you all to Jacqui Sharples, founder of Print for Love of Wood… A Lancashire lass I am very pleased indeed to have as part of our Unlimited Editions collective!… As my artist furthest afield, we have sadly not yet had the chance to meet in person, but we have a great e-relationship! :-)

Print for Love of Wood is a small design & letterpress studio in Lancashire dedicated to the love of wood type and tree hugging paper. It is a labour of love set up by freelance graphic designer Jacqui Sharples – inspired by a passion for print, the smell of ink, vintage typography and her collection of wood type. She prints in-house on a range of vintage printing presses, including a Victorian treadle, using traditional methods of hand setting type. All her presses are manually operated so the only energy used is an eco-friendly light bulb and her muscle power! Ink is recycled from printers who have closed down due to the digital impact on traditional methods of print.

UE: Love the name PFLOW!… how did you arrive at that?
Jacqui:
Being a designer the worst and best job in the world is designing your own identity!… I followed my heart! ‘Print for Love of Wood’ encompassed two things that are close to my heart – the environment and my passion for wood type.

UE: What started your love of letterpress?
Jacqui: Whilst doing my BA Graphic Design at Uni, I bought a small press and it just grew from there… To the point where I’ve run out of room and now run six presses, all operated by hand. But there were two main influences that fell in my lap, the compete collection of wood type from a local printers, that I got for a tiny sum of money, and meeting a local retired compositor, John, who has become my friend and mentor. He’s like my adopted dad passing down all his knowledge and skills to the point of giving me my own space in his workshop which is like my second home. He even likes my taste in music ;)

I remember reading that you had gone back to college and started anew in this field after losing your job… Big brave career changes!… And you’ve really grasped it wholeheartedly and have a real growing following – a success story in my book!… Tell us more…

I was made redundant after 26 years of working as a Graphic Designer in advertising and magazines, but to be honest I’d had enough! I decided to do my degree and possibly go into teaching… It wasn’t an easy decision as I have three young boys, but I have a very supportive husband!

During the three year degree I started up my company whilst still freelancing as a designer. It’s been hard graft, but I don’t feel like I’m working (apart from the admin!) I’m doing something that I love! Plus I got to re-live my youth at Uni, win some awards, win free holidays to New York and Berlin and to top it off graduated with a first class honours. It put the spring back in my step!

Teaching full time has been put on hold while I put all my energy into Print for Love of Wood and continue to expand my printed wares. I’m so grateful for the continued support from Sara and Patrick at Unlimited Editions plus the people who buy my work. ‘Believe in Magic’ and your dreams just might come true!

UE: Who/what are your inspirations?
Jacqui: I just love vintage typography, graphic design and northern culture, but sometimes the inspiration is right in front of me in the form of wood type.

UE: I love the fact you are so passionate about what you do as well as being so talented! You seem very active within the letterpress scene!!
Jacqui: I’m a great believer in the saying what goes around come around’, therefore I love to share my knowledge and help out other enthusiasts. It’s what you bring to the table that matters! I’ve been very lucky that through sharing my passion and helping others has given me some fantastic opportunities and life-long friends.

UE: Onwards and upwards, what’s next?…
Jacqui: Workshops from my studio. I’ve already taken my presses and type on the road for letterpress workshops, but am looking forward to having some company in the studio.

UE: Unfulfilled ambitions?
Jacqui: So many!… But to have a larger studio where all the presses will fit and to travel the world visiting the last remaining letterpress print shops using wood type.

UE: Who would you most like to collaborate with on a project?
Jacqui: Got to be Alan Kitching!

UE: Best moment in your day?
Jacqui: Waking up in the morning knowing I’ll spend the day doing what I love!

UE: Do you find the Pennines a creative place?…
Jacqui: I’ve got Manchester, Liverpool, the Lake District, Yorkshire, country side and the seaside all on my doorstep. What more could you ask for! (Apart from less rain and more sun!)

Our latest interview is with Liz Foster – an amazingly talented designer who makes the most beautiful cushions for us at UE…

Liz originally trained as a painter at the Glasgow School of Art, and over the past 15 years has exhibited her work nationally. Over recent years her work has become more closely linked with textiles, with elements of sewing and embroidery finding its way in to her canvases. Alongside teaching fine art she taught photography and graphic design, and it was during this time that she developed her interest in typography.

In 2008 with the birth of her son, she decided to give up teaching and start Liz Foster Design. All her textile pieces are handmade using top quality fabrics including wool, linen and silks. Unusual vintage fabrics are also included in the range. Each piece is unique and the designs and colour ranges are constantly evolving. And we are very excited that Liz is making pieces which are exclusive to us at UE!

UE: Who/what are your biggest inspirations?
Liz Foster: It’s a real mix of artists and designers. In terms of textiles it’s more historic pieces such as banners, samplers and quilts than specific designers. I’m really trying to combine my painter’s sense of colour and form with the traditional craft of sewing.

UE: What are you currently working on?
Liz Foster: I’m finishing off some new designs for autumn/winter season, which include some Christmas stuff too. It’s my first foray into seasonal designs and it’s quite evident I’ve left it all far too late!

UE: Any unfulfilled ambitions?
Liz Foster: At the moment growing my design label is my main pursuit…Though I’ve always fancied a long journey through Europe on the Orient Express. I’m not adverse to a bit of first class luxury.

UE: Dream commission? dream client?!
Liz Foster: I’d love to work on really large wall mounted pieces, to be hung in some grand historic setting.

UE: Oddest job so far?
Liz Foster: I’ve just designed and made a set of four cushions based on the Cyclone Warning System in Hong Kong. I also made a set of Whitby Scampi cushions for, well, the owners of Whitby Scampi.

UE: Best thing about being a designer?
Liz Foster: It’s the autonomy of having an idea and seeing it through to reality. It’s a different process to painting, and I’ve had to discipline myself and keep records and plans of everything I make… Even noting down the colour of cotton I use on a piece, so I can re-make something if need be. I’ve actually found that the most difficult thing in the transition from painter to designer.

UE: What’s next?
Liz Foster: Keep on working, expanding the range of products I make and hopefully bring together my work as a fine artist and designer more. I think it’s possible to do both without compromising either.

UE: Best moment in your day?
Liz Foster: My little boy’s in bed, my husband is back from work and is fed and I’m sitting here in my garden studio with the wind howling outside, the radio on and I’m typing up answers to questions about my work… That ain’t so bad is it?

Introducing two new pieces involving two of my favourite things by the fantastic Print for Love of Wood!

‘Bake More Cake’ is inspired by her love of vintage and retro kitchenalia, and the ‘Great British Bake Off’! Each print has been lovingly printed on an antique press using vintage wood letters, ornaments, borders on recycled flecked card. Hand inked and hand fed through the press, due to the nature of letterpress each print is unique. Priced at £15 each.

‘When All Else Fails’ reminds us to crack open a bottle when all seems lost or you’ve had a bad day, and hopefully all will come good in the morning (either that or you’ll have a banging head and hopefully forgotten your troubles!)… Printed letterpress with antique wood type on a vintage press. Each print has passed through the press 6 times to overlap each letter. Printed in red and grey ink on 170g recycled off white flecked stock. Each print is signed and priced at £20 each.

The eagerly awaited NEW Happiness Manifesto by Aardvark on Sea is NOW IN STOCK! :-)

As with their other Manifestos, They are letterpress prints made locally using traditional wood and metal type. They are signed, open editions on recycled/FSC 180gsm paper. Printed in black and teal. Priced at £25 unframed.

Be quick and nab yours online here or in our next Saturday Studio shop!

Our second UE interview is with the very talented Stuart Tolley of Transmission. Having been lucky enough to meet him 6 years ago when we were both based in New England House Studios, we’ve been great friends since, and are so chuffed he’s a part of our Unlimited Editions collective!

Like our studio Unlimited, Transmission is also a multi-disciplinary art direction and graphic design studio, that creates highly considered solutions for print and screen. They approach every project with passion and work with a variety of clients and a growing network of collaborators. They work on projects of any scale and have recently art directed magazines, curated exhibitions, designed books, created brand guidelines, directed motion graphics and illustrated book covers.

UE: Who are your heroes/biggest inspirations?
Stuart: One of my main sources of inspiration has always been music and the visual culture that surrounds it. While studying I read a lot about the rise and fall of Punk and the Psychedelic movement and am fascinated by the evolution of subcultures. I am still very passionate about music and to me there is something special about beautifully designed music packaging. There are a too many contemporary designers to list, but the obvious choice would be Non-Format. I love the way they keep evolving and their use of print techniques and materials is stunning. I am also passionate about photography and I think it inspired me to start a career in the magazine industry. I would really like to own an original print by Robert Frank, William Eggleston or Dan Holdsworth.

UE: Your 5 ‘must do’s’ in Brighton?
Stuart:
1. If you are visiting Brighton, you’ve got to go on the pier and grab a go on the dolphin racing game at the back.
2. Shop down Kensington Gardens for Resident Records and Snoopers Paradise.
3. If the sun is out, an afternoon drinking session outside the Fortune of War is always fun. Keep in the Brighton spirit by having a Tuaca.
4. The Duke of York cinema shows fantastic independent films.
5. Dinner at Chilli Pickle. The mixed Tandoori Lamb dish I had the other week was amazing.

UE: What are you currently working on?
Stuart:
Book cover designs and graphic illustration for a variety of independent publishers – the latest to be approved is about Tom Waits. The branding of a media company, the cover design and photography for an independent record, and I am currently writing and designing proposals for a book project about music packaging and a photographic book/magazine about multi-cultural Britain.

UE: Any unfulfilled ambitions?
Stuart:
To truly work remotely on a sandy beach in some far flung hot climate.

UE: Favourite font of the moment?
Stuart: I don’t have one, but I am pretty sure I overuse Avant Garde Bold. I also like Black Slabbath, but this is partly because of the name.

UE: Dream commission? dream client?!
Stuart: My dream commission would be to art direct the music campaign for a band/artists I really love. This would include everything from art directing the music packaging, directing the video to designing all digital environments. Doesn’t have to be anyone famous, just someone I have been into for years.

UE: Oddest job so far?
Stuart: That has to be the art direction of Disappear Here, a pop culture magazine supposedly edited by Peaches Geldoff. She did nothing and I wasn’t surprised when it folded – I was gutted, as I had fun producing two issues with great people who actually did work.

UE: Best thing about being an designer?
Stuart: I get to fly to exotic locations around the world and am constantly surrounded by beautiful women.

UE: What work do you wish you had done given the chance?!
Stuart: The art direction of Ray-Gun magazine. It was everything I am interested in – expressive and innovative (at the time) design, matched with editorial content about music, art and culture. It made a name for David Carson and secured him as a graphic design icon. I was too young to appreciate early i-D or Neville Brody at The Face, but saw the impact of Ray Gun.

UE: Sharing a studio or working solo?
Stuart: I share a space with 4 other creatives. It’s great and I would struggle if I went back to working on my own.

See all Stuarts work at UE here and keep watch for a UE exclusive print for Xmas! :-)
