We are very excited to introduce to you yet another amazing Unlimited Editions artist, HelloMarine!
HelloMarine was born in Paris, grew up in the South of France and moved to Brighton to study Graphic Design. Now living and working in Brighton as an illustrator, she divides her time between commissions for clients and personal work that she exhibits regularly.
She is inspired by music, fashion, the Ye-Ye movement in France in the sixties, vintage toys, car boot sales, polka dots and patterns in general, grizzlies, tipis, Alfred Hitchcock films… Her work is vivid, vibrant, sometimes retro and very slightly surreal!
HelloMarine has kindly answered a few questions we put to her recently…
UE: Who are your biggest inspirations?
HelloMarine: This is a very hard question as I admire so many people’s work… Off the top of my head Geoff McFetridge, Margaret Kilgallen, Caroline Smith (70′s fashion illustrator), Tadanori Yokoo… the list goes on!… I get inspired by lots of things, from music to fashion, photography, films… I love all of Alfred Hitchcock films for example…
UE: What started your love of Graphic Design?
HelloMarine: I wouldn’t say that I ‘love’ Graphic Design. I studied it, but have always been more of an image maker. Also, I’m really bad with type and fonts unless it’s hand drawn!… From a young age I was exposed to lots of artists work. My dad was a photographer and my parents used to take me and my sister to numerous exhibitions… I also had a huge collection of books as a child, and would spend ages analysing illustrations and copying them. Gyo Fujikawa, of which I had lots of books, is still one of my all time favourite illustrators when it comes to children books.
UE: What are you working on at the moment?
HelloMarine: I have just finished a project for the French Ministry of Education, doing some illustrations for a brochure that will go out to all the teachers and parents in France… big work!… and I’m now working for Psychologies Magazine. I love the diversity… It keeps me interested! I also keep myself busy making prints for galleries!
UE: Best moment in the day?
HelloMarine: The best moment in the day is when my kids wake up and I see their little smiles… Cheesy but true! Also, I love to find time to sit down, watch the world go by and drink a cup of coffee.
UE: Who would you most like to collaborate with?
HelloMarine: See the first question!… Also, I’ve done artwork for some music before, working for some of my favourite artists would be amazing… the list is too long though!…
UE: Greatest achievement so far?
HelloMarine: Working for Penguin was brilliant, also my first ever project, the album cover for the mighty Alice Russell, My Favourite Letters was very special because of the overwhelming response and the fact that I really admire her.
UE: What are you listening to at the moment?
HelloMarine: Music is always on in my studio and my taste is very eclectic. Today I’ve been listening to Django Django and The Roots… Tomorrow who knows!
HelloMarine’s work can also be seen in our Studio Shop in Brighton.
